(September 23, 2022) – Today, 23-year-old Richmond, VA rapper FNF Chop connects with Brooklyn drill rapper Fivio Foreign in new single “Repeat.” Produced by 20k, the menacing beat allows for both rappers to trade boastful lyrics and flex on having no competition. Earlier this year, FNF Chop released his new EP No Way Out. The EP features singles “One Two” featuring YungManny, “Best Friend” featuring North Carolina rapper Stunna 4 Vegas and his viral hit “Walk Down” featuring Young Nudy and Sheff G. Chop’s music is full of high-octane energy. He delivers gritty bars over hard-hitting bass instrumental beats. About FNF Chop:
Richmond, Virginia’s FNF Chop is approaching uncharted territory for an artist from his hometown in recent memory. The last household name to come out of Virginia’s capital city was D’Angelo, but the neo-soul icon’s catalog is a completely different side of the coin from the River City stories that Chop is telling. Born in Baltimore, but raised in Richmond, Chop came up idolizing the likes of T-Pain (for his different approach) and Lil Wayne for his relentlessness. It’s not easy to draw a parallel between Chop and Pain, but like many artists of the past two decades, Wayne shows up in his DNA — but he’s forging a path that’s all his own.
Chop’s been a key player in the city’s street rap scene for the past few years, but things started to look up after he released his now-hit single “Walk Down” in 2019. The song — which spends its short duration promising to violently hunt down enemies — has the type of bass that rattles trunks so hard that you’ll hear the car coming a few blocks before you even see it. The additive energy made the song travel throughout the whole state of Virginia before the rest of the internet started to get a whiff of its magic. But, strangely enough, Chop never put any real effort into promoting the song. “Walk Down” actually didn’t take off nationally until Chop was in Richmond’s city jail for a parole violation. Kids on TikTok got a hold of it, made a dance to accompany the track, and from there, it went straight to the moon. Then labels started calling.
“I wouldn’t really say I worked that record, bro. I got locked up and I was doing my time and that shit started blowing up out the blue,” he says over the phone.”After that, I was like, ‘All right, well, I’m going to put a little bit more energy into it. It was kind of unexpected, to be 100% honest with you. It was just like, well, this is something that’s doing good. Keep pushing it.” The resurgence of the song and Chop putting new energy into it proved to be the right choice. Its initial video surpassed 1 million views and a second was shot while he was incarcerated and premiered on WorldStarr Hip-Hop, which now has over 300,000. Soon after, the track got a star-studded remix that featured Brooklyn drill artist Sheff G and East Atlanta star Yung Nudy. And most recently, he enlisted North Carolina rapper Stunna 4 Vegas for his track “Best Friend,” which was released to critical acclaim.
The beauty of FNF Chop’s success is that, while he’s forging his own path, his ascension will ultimately bring more attention to his hometown, which is something he’s looking forward to. And even though his forthcoming project is titled No Way Out, it seems like he has a clear sight of brighter days ahead. “I’m in a beautiful space of mind right now. I’m more determined and more ready than I am excited,” he says.
