To know the New York drill story is to know Sheff G. Hailing from Brooklyn’s Flatbush neighborhood, Sheff G was predestined to shift the city’s culture on a musical level and beyond. A student of the streets, Sheff learned early on how to play to his strengths, bringing together Chicago drill’s no-filter lyricism and the UK iteration’s sinister production and baritone. Second to none, thanks to his own arsenal of life experiences that made him the charismatic MC he is today, Sheff G painstakingly paved the way for countless New York drill artists who followed in his path. An undeniable trailblazer in the genre space, Sheff quickly rose to international prominence, boasting two RIAA-certified gold records with the viral “No Suburban, Pt. 2” (300M Streams) and “Tip Toe” (147M Streams)alongside friend and fellow artist Sleepy Hallow, with hundreds of millions of streams and views across songs and platforms. Rocking pigtail braids and a Puma tracksuit, Sheff popularized a style entirely his own following his underground hit “No Suburban” (33M Streams. Following this, he released a flurry of EPs, including debut studio album One and Only and was hailed by Pitchfork as “a pioneer of Brooklyn drill and one of its most technically gifted lyricists.” Throughout his rise, Sheff joined forces with a number of major names in hip-hop, including A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, King Von, Eli Fross, Polo G and Fivio Foreign. While explosive, Sheff’s journey has been anything but linear. All the while, the 25-year-old rapper acquired the wisdom of someone twice his age, with plans to pay it forward by way of his label Winners Circle alongside fellow Brooklynite, Sleepy Hallow, and his non-profit organization started during his time behind bars, Love on Life Foundation, meant to address mental health and income disparities in his community.
