LOS ANGELES, CA (March 1, 2024) – Today, breakout pop artist Isaac Dunbar returns with the release of his latest single, “Backseat Girl,” out now via RCA Records.
A euphoric, ‘70s-laced ballad set to the strums of an acoustic guitar, Isaac’s flair for theatrical vocals and lush, illustrative lyricism remains as prominent as ever, encapsulating the fear of not being in the driver’s seat of one’s own experiences.
Says Isaac of the track, “To be a backseat girl is to feel like you are missing out. Sitting in the backseat, you miss out on all the laughter, the fun, and conversations that everybody else gets to experience. It’s an anthem for the girl who feels lonely.”
“Backseat Girl” follows on the heels of “Apartment A,” a maximalist, disco-driven romp, which Isaac released in January and marked his first taste of new music in two years. He his latest EP, Banish The Banshee, in 2022, a conceptual body of work written and produced by Isaac, which told the story of his life through a series of sonic parables. The project garnered praise from Billboard, The FADER, Consequence, Teen Vogue, NPR, Dazed, and more, earning him a nomination for ‘Breakthrough Music Artist’ at the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards.
About Isaac Dunbar
If Isaac Dunbar revealed himself to be a time traveler, it would make perfect sense. The Rhode Island-born and Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer leaps between Broadway levels of theatrical bombast, skyscraping stadium rock hooks straight out of the seventies, nineties-esque alternative spirit, and larger-than-life two-thousands pop extravagance. There’s nothing subtle about him—and the world is better for it. Isaac’s keen emotional intuition and artistic acuity belie his age, and at just 21 years old, he has asserted himself as the rare talent who gleefully defies genres, rules, and eras all at once.
In between opening for girl in red during 2019, he unveiled music at a prolific pace. “onion boy” racked up over 32 million global streams, while his debut project balloons don’t float here instantly reacted with audiences. At 16, he inked a deal with RCA Records and served up isaac’s insects in 2020 and evil twin in 2021. The latter boasted “love, or the lack thereof,” amassing north of 26 million global streams. Along the way, VMAN attested, “an expert autodidact, Dunbar’s impressive knowledge of music theory and diverse tonal range have set the young vocalist apart from cookie-cutter pop.” Following acclaim from TIME, Billboard, Teen Vogue, Nylon, The FADER, LADYGUNN, NPR, and more, the Afro-Italian American crash landed with his 2022 EP, Banish The Banshee, with UPROXX declaring Isaac as the “up-and-coming, grandiose pop star we need right now.” The project was released to critical praise and earned Isaac a spot on GLAAD’s 20 Under 20 List and a nomination for ‘Breakthrough Music Artist’ at the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards. Now with new music on the way in 2024, Isaac is boldly stepping into the next era of his sonic journey.
