“[Sally Boy has] moved to the top of my summertime playlist” –Ones to Watch
LOS ANGELES (July 20, 2022) – Today, rising artist Sally Boy releases his new single, “true american,” out now via Loud Robot/RCA Records.
Partnering with musician Kyle Lux, the feel-good single is perfect for the summer season, opening on a breezy guitar strumming before bursting into an up-tempo electronic production. Sally Boy’s quick-witted lyricism and catchy melodies float over the beat, with Kyle carrying the pace throughout the second half of the track.
“I spoke my mind once,” says Sally Boy of the inspiration behind the track. “I was at the beach. No one noticed, it was summer. It’s always summer in America. Bring the summer in the right way, like the true Americans we are. Get drunk enough at the beach to speak your mind, forget the medical bills, political turmoil. It’s 90 degrees out, can’t waste a perfect day. There aren’t too many left. GIVE A BITCH A BREAK.”
“true american” is the latest single from Sally Boy, with his forthcoming EP due out later this year. Fans can follow Sally Boy and stay tuned on news about the project at http://www.giveabitchabreak.com/
About Sally Boy
The Philadelphia-born, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter hit the scene in 2020 with his debut EP EREZ, all while being a senior at USC majoring in popular music and minoring in philosophy. The EP garnered numerous accolades, including features in Wonderland, Flaunt, American Songwriter, Ones to Watch, and more, in addition to earning Sally Boy a placement on Pigeons & Planes’ ‘Best New Artists’ list. He’s also garnered Spotify support, landing on anti pop, Indie Pop, Varsity Bars, young & free, idk playlists.
Self-acceptance is at the root of Sally Boy. Erez adopted the name after writing the song “Sally Boy,” his first real solo effort outside his work with his band. It’s a dreamy conversation with his younger self set to a beautiful acoustic guitar. As a child, Erez was sometimes teased for being soft. Emotional. Feminine. The bullshit machismo that young boys absorb and inflict on others made him feel stifled and strange. Like he didn’t belong. He tried to bury that side of himself and craft a persona that felt tougher, more masculine. But it wasn’t true. By dubbing himself Sally Boy, Erez dispenses with inauthentic self-presentation. His 2021 EP, Lies I Tell Myself, captures that tone perfectly.
Lies I Tell Myself is about lightness, energy, and unabashedly being yourself. Each song on the record contains at least one line in which he tells himself some half-truth to feel better. Despite the concept behind the project, Erez didn’t force anything during the songwriting. These are simply expressions of who he is and where he’s at. Sally Boy’s music is playful, with drums that get into your system at the molecular level, forcing you to move; the lyrics have swagger, even when dabbling in self-deprecation. It’s an amusing celebration of accepting yourself, flaws and all.
